I have been a member of Shiphay School community since 2000 and have been a member of the Governing Body since 2006. Within the school, I am Head of School, Maths SLE (Specialist Leader of Education) and Maths Mastery Specialist. In addition to this, I am Music Champion and really enjoy all the opportunities this allows me to work with the children across the school to develop their love of singing, music, dancing and performing. I enjoy the challenge of being staff governor as this has allowed me to get involved in the developing of strategic vision for the school and to ensure all our pupils have the wide-range experiences that will allow them to develop a love of learning and have high aspirations for their future.

I am a Parent Governor at Shiphay Learning Academy and have therefore seen first hand what an excellent standard of education and pastoral support the team at Shiphay offer to the children who are part of this community. I am delighted to be a Shiphay governor at what is a very exciting time both for the school and for the Riviera Education Trust. In my working life, I am a Solicitor working for a law firm in Torquay.

I joined the Local Standards Board as a governor in autumn 2021 after my eldest daughter joined the school in the reception class.
I have recently left a ten year academic career in which I directed the undergraduate Economics degrees at Coventry University, after deciding to relocate back to Devon with my family.
We have been welcomed so warmly into both the local and school community, and I look forward to giving back by contributing to the school’s governing board.

I am now retired. My working career involved being responsible for all staff training with the HM Courts Service based in London and Bristol. I have also worked with a Local Housing Association following the re-location of my working life to Devon a few years ago.
I volunteer to become a school governor to commit to a role supporting the local community. I have some previous governor experience with a secondary school. I'm very excited about supporting the continuous improvement focus of Shiphay Learning Academy. My initial focus will be the important subject of Safeguarding.

I have worked in education for over twenty years; up until 2023, I was deputy head at St Marychurch CofE Primary and Nursery School, where I led on safeguarding, curriculum development, mental health and much more. In 2023, I left that role to become a foster carer and still work in education as a supply teacher. I am an advocate for equity over equality and firmly believe that all children should be able to access what they need to help them thrive and that it is important to nurture the whole child. My daughter is in her final year at Shiphay and I feel she has received a fantastic education, providing her with wonderful opportunities that have helped her to develop her passions in many ways. I am pleased to be a governor as it enables me to give back to the local community and support the school as it continues to grow and flourish.

Welcome to our Governors' section
The Local Standards Board (LSB) is responsible for monitoring standards and school improvement at Shiphay Learning Academy. They hold school leaders to account and report back to the trustees of Riviera Education Trust.
The LSB meet at least three times throughout the school year and governors will often spend time in school to monitor school improvement and standards at a local level.
"Governors are part of the overall system of school accountability. They have a vital role to play in driving up school and pupil performance and ensuring every child receives the best possible education."
