Shiphay Governors

Welcome to  our Governors' section

The Local Standards Board (LSB) is responsible for monitoring standards and school improvement at Shiphay Learning Academy.  They hold school leaders to account and report back to the trustees of Riviera Education Trust.
The LSB meet at least three times throughout the school year and governors will often spend time in school to monitor school improvement and standards at a local level.
"Governors are part of the overall system of school accountability. They have a vital role to play in driving up school and pupil performance and ensuring every child receives the best possible education."

I have been a member fo Shiphay School community since 2000 and have been a member of the Governoring Body since 2006.  Within the school, I am Deputy Headteacher, Maths SLE (Specialist Leader of Education), Maths Mastery Specialist Teacher and I currently teach Year 6.  My responsibilities across the school include Data, Maths and Outdoor Education. In addition to this, I am Music Champion and really enjoy all the opportunities this allows me to work with the children across the school to develop their love of singing, music, dancing and performing.  I enjoy the challenge of being staff governor as this has allowed me to get involved in the developing of strategic vision for the school and to ensure all our pupils have the wide-range experiences that will allow them to develop a love of learning and have high aspirations for their future.

Since joining Shiphay in 1998 and becoming Deputy Head in 2009, I have taught predominantly in Reception and Y1.  I enjoy supporting children of all ages in school and in developing our youngest pupils to become confident, independent children with a love of learning and playing. I believe that a confident and positive mindset is one of the keys to successful, lifelong learning. I am also the Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) and Designated Teacher for Looked After Children.

I strongly believe that all children deserve the highest quality provision and teaching to meet their needs.  My role is to ensure that our most vulnerable children attend school regularly, make good progress and have access to any additional support they may need. In addition to Inclusion, I am responsible for monitoring and reporting on Attendance.

As a Governor with over 15 years’ experience, I consider my role to be highly valuable to the school and the Trust in raising awareness of the key issues that relate to the emotional and social health and well-being of all pupils and their families.

I have 2 children at Shiphay Academy, and  currently a full time mother, although I enjoy helping out at school and during holiday events.
I am inspired by the community approach of the school and its focus on the family and their community as well as the children themselves, and their academic and social achievements.
In my working life, I have experience in writing and preparation of organisational strategies and policies, housing, I.T management and business management.  I have an aptitude for training, supporting children and adults, and am passionate about literacy, comprehension and mathematical understanding for young children.   I believe that emotional and social well-being and development of child and adult are important in enabling children to learn effectively.

I was keen to become a governor as I believe all children deserve the best education in a safe and welcoming environment. As a mum of 2 children who used to attend Shiphay Learning Academy, I am aware of the fantastic support and enthusiasm the teachers and support staff show to the pupils and I am keen to help maintain this ethos into the future.   I am also Lead practice nurse and research nurse at a local GP surgery.

I have recently joined Shiphay Learning Academy as a Safeguarding Governor.  I have worked with children and families locally in a range of roles, including education and have recently qualified as a Social Worker, securing a role locally as a children’s Social Worker.  I am passionate about children being able to learn and succeed in life.  I value the power of an excellent education experience to help children to achieve their best possible outcomes.
